Learning from Vernacular

28/02/2014 - 28/12/2013

The exhibition Learning from Vernacular will be displayed from December 28th 2013, in two places simultaneously: The Munio Gitai Weinraub Architecture Museum in Haifa and the recently opened Munio Gitai Weinraub Gallery in Kibbutz Kfar Masaryk. The exhibition shows examples of traditional constructions all over the world and wonders what how can this kind of “Architecture without architects” effect our way of thinking today.

The exhibition, in collaboration with the Archives de la construction modern at EPFL (ֹcole Polytechnique Fe’de’rale of Lausanne), presents a compressive view on vernacular architecture with its unique collection of documents and models, offering a wide range of spatial, symbolic and constructive solutions that constitute the formations of domestic and working spaces in traditional cultures.

Undoubtedly, the vernacular practices of diverse cultures do not in themselves provide solutions to contemporary needs or offer sustainable alternatives to the current situation; yet, the abundance of creative and ingenious solutions embodied in them demonstrate the human ability to make the most in given circumstances and utilize available resources efficiently and effectively.

The case studies shown at the Munio Gitai Weinraub Architecture Museum and in the Munio Gitai Gallery present three specific themes that features in the vernacular architecture of many regions in the bay of the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East – water management, court dwellings, and nomadism and cave dwellings. These are examined from the perspective guiding the research at the EPFL collection of vernacular architecture, which also provides the fourth exhibition theme: construction techniques and materials.
